I love springtime and I am so happy to prepare my Homemade products to assure I keep my skin healthy and free from sun damage all year round. Here are the recipes I have used this season.

Sun Lotion

1/2 Cup Sweet Almond or Olive Oil (spf 2-8)

1/4 Cup Organic Coconut Oil (spf 2-8)

1/4 Cup Beeswax

1/8 Cup Avocado Oil (spf 4-15)

2 Tablespoons Shea Butter unrefined (spf 3-6), Cacao Butter or Mango Butter

(I got my Cacao Butter at Tailor Made Nutrition in Woodbury.)

1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil

3 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano)

Optional :

20-40 total drops of Young Living Essential Oils:

(I only recommend Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, as I trust this company and their Seed to Seal  promise of oil purity and authenticity.  I feel safe to use these oils alone on my family, my little tiny grandchildren and my clients in the hair salon.)

15 Drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil

5 Drops Patchouli Essential Oil

5 Drops Geranium Essential Oil

5 Drops Helichrysum Essential Oil

3 Drops Sacred Frankincense Essential Oil

or Frankincense Essential Oil

3 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil

3 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Directions:

  1. Combine the first 6 ingredients (not the zinc oxide). Use a double boiler, filling the bottom pan with a couple inches of water and the top pan with your ingredients. Otherwise fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.  Place a canning jar with the ingredients inside, and the lid loosely on the jar into the pan of water.
  2. Stir ingredients occasionally as they melt to incorporate. Once the ingredients are melted, remove from heat and add the zinc oxide and the essential oils, stir well and pour into your jar or tin.  I like these Amber Glass Jars for light sensitive blends when using essential oils.
  3. Small pint sized mason jars work well also. Stir occasionally as it cools to make sure it is well blended.
  4. Use this lotion as you normally would use a sun lotion.  It is good to use it up within 6 months.

 Additional Notes

  • Make sure you reapply especially when swimming although it is somewhat waterproof.
  • Do not inhale the Zinc Oxide!
  • More beeswax makes a thicker lotion.
  • Store this in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.
  • Remove the Zinc Oxide for a lovely body butter.

This lotion feels fantastic and makes the skin look great!

Body Butter

I used the above recipe, used olive oil rather than sweet almond oil and omitted the zinc oxide.  In order for the mixture to thicken I needed to refrigerate the finished product for a couple of hours.  Since then I have stored it in a cool, dry area of my bathroom and it has remained a lovely consistency.

I used Lavender , Ylang Ylang and Patchouli oils to encourage skin youthfulness and firmness.

I also made a body butter safe for Kids too recipe with coconut oil and Cacao Butter (not appropriate for the face, as these oils have a high comedogenic rating which is fine for the body skin which has sweat glands, but not for the facial skin which has oil glands.) I got my Cacao Butter at Tailor Made Nutrition in Woodbury.

I used Lavender Oil for the kiddos and grown ups too! My skin is so beautiful since I have been applying Lavender Oil the past year in my DIY lotions!

Spray Sun Lotion for Kids too

Glass Sprayer Bottle

1 Cup Aloe Vera Juice  (a gloppy, pure juice at least 99%)

1/4 Cup Avocado Oil

3 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide Powder (non nano)

15 Drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil

10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil  for kids

or for adults a combination of these Young Living Essential Oils:

(I only recommend Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, as I trust this company and their Seed to Seal  promise of oil purity and authenticity. I feel safe to use these oils alone on my family, my little tiny grandchildren and my clients in the hair salon.)

Lavender

Peppermint

Geranium

Patchouli

Add all ingredients to a sprayer bottle. Do not inhale the Zinc Oxide Powder! Shake before each use.

Facial Sun Lotion

I am using carrier oils in this recipe which are low in comedogenic ratings so as not to cause acne or clog the pores on the face. Coconut oil is not appropriate for the face, as it has a high comedogenic rating which is fine for the body skin which has sweat glands, but not for the facial skin which has oil glands.  I only recommend using it on the face as a make-up remover when it is wiped off instantly with a warm, wet washcloth.

1/2 Cup Sweet Almond or Jojoba Oil

1/4 Cup Unrefined Shea Butter or Mango Butter  (I used Mango Butter for the antioxidant properties)

1/4 Cup Beeswax

1/8 Cup Avocado Oil

3 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide Powder

15 Drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil

Optional Essential Oils:

10-20 total drops of Young Living Essential Oils (I only recommend Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, as I trust this company and their Seed to Seal  promise of oil purity and authenticity. I feel safe to use these oils alone on my family, my little tiny grandchildren and my clients in the hair salon.)

5 drops Geranium

5 drops Helichrysum

3 drops Sacred Frankincense

Bathroom Clutter and Morning Routine

by Jill Radabaugh on September 26, 2012

Happy Autumn!  It’s been a gorgeous September in Minnesota!  The leaves are turning, and it’s time to prepare our little nests for a lovely new season.

I would like to share a couple of tips with you, regarding something I have learned about sunscreen, and also how to organize your hair products and make-up.

According to my facial plastic surgeon (who stitched me up after removal of a patch of skin cancer on my face) most sunscreens don’t work to block the harmful cancer causing rays from the sun.  After much discussion, his bottom line was that we need Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide at a minimum of 5% in our sunscreens.  The other chemical sunscreens prevent burning which helps, but does not block the harmful rays.  Here are the sunscreens that I have found.  The powdered Colorscience is nice to reapply over make-up.  Please let me know what you find that works for you

.

Do you have too many products taking up space in your bathroom?  Are you sentimentally attached to your goods, and having trouble weeding out what you don’t use?  Try this!  Get two baskets or shoe boxes and place all your products in one of them.  Once you use a product place it in the other container.  In December anything you haven’t used gets thrown away or donated to someone who will use it.  Old product does spoil so it is ok to throw it out.  Use this technique for your make-up as well.

To keep your counters free of clutter, separate your facial products from your hair products and keep them in containers in a cabinet or closet. Take out the container when you are getting ready and put it away when you are finished.

I keep my make-up in a desk drawer and use a lit make-up mirror for application.  I place my make-up brushes in a pretty little vase and lip- stick, mascara and liners in little ceramic bowls and a small make-up bag.  All my eye shadow colors are in a little clear box, and powders and blushes in a small Tupperware box.

Have a wonderful Autumn, be good to yourself and I hope you enjoyed my beauty tips!

Sugar Sugar, da da da da da da, oh Honey Honey….

September 25, 2011

I have been avoiding sugar for about six weeks or so.  I have lost eleven pounds, thankfully.  The first three days, I had a terrible headache, probably from withdrawal.  I believe I was addicted to sugar, sweets, chocolate, carbs…  Now, I feel better and I really don’t crave anything.  This is the first time in […]

Never Enough Sleep

May 19, 2011

My personal experience with lack of sleep, begins with my personality.  Even as a little girl, I couldn’t bare to go to sleep, because I felt I would miss out on something exciting.  I remember hearing other children playing outside, when I was in my bed trying to sleep.  That was torture.  As a high […]
