I love springtime and I am so happy to prepare my Homemade products to assure I keep my skin healthy and free from sun damage all year round. Here are the recipes I have used this season.

Sun Lotion

1/2 Cup Sweet Almond or Olive Oil (spf 2-8)

1/4 Cup Organic Coconut Oil (spf 2-8)

1/4 Cup Beeswax

1/8 Cup Avocado Oil (spf 4-15)

2 Tablespoons Shea Butter unrefined (spf 3-6), Cacao Butter or Mango Butter

(I got my Cacao Butter at Tailor Made Nutrition in Woodbury.)

1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil

3 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano)

Optional :

20-40 total drops of Young Living Essential Oils:

(I only recommend Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, as I trust this company and their Seed to Seal  promise of oil purity and authenticity.  I feel safe to use these oils alone on my family, my little tiny grandchildren and my clients in the hair salon.)

15 Drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil

5 Drops Patchouli Essential Oil

5 Drops Geranium Essential Oil

5 Drops Helichrysum Essential Oil

3 Drops Sacred Frankincense Essential Oil

or Frankincense Essential Oil

3 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil

3 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Directions:

  1. Combine the first 6 ingredients (not the zinc oxide). Use a double boiler, filling the bottom pan with a couple inches of water and the top pan with your ingredients. Otherwise fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.  Place a canning jar with the ingredients inside, and the lid loosely on the jar into the pan of water.
  2. Stir ingredients occasionally as they melt to incorporate. Once the ingredients are melted, remove from heat and add the zinc oxide and the essential oils, stir well and pour into your jar or tin.  I like these Amber Glass Jars for light sensitive blends when using essential oils.
  3. Small pint sized mason jars work well also. Stir occasionally as it cools to make sure it is well blended.
  4. Use this lotion as you normally would use a sun lotion.  It is good to use it up within 6 months.

 Additional Notes

  • Make sure you reapply especially when swimming although it is somewhat waterproof.
  • Do not inhale the Zinc Oxide!
  • More beeswax makes a thicker lotion.
  • Store this in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.
  • Remove the Zinc Oxide for a lovely body butter.

This lotion feels fantastic and makes the skin look great!

Body Butter

I used the above recipe, used olive oil rather than sweet almond oil and omitted the zinc oxide.  In order for the mixture to thicken I needed to refrigerate the finished product for a couple of hours.  Since then I have stored it in a cool, dry area of my bathroom and it has remained a lovely consistency.

I used Lavender , Ylang Ylang and Patchouli oils to encourage skin youthfulness and firmness.

I also made a body butter safe for Kids too recipe with coconut oil and Cacao Butter (not appropriate for the face, as these oils have a high comedogenic rating which is fine for the body skin which has sweat glands, but not for the facial skin which has oil glands.) I got my Cacao Butter at Tailor Made Nutrition in Woodbury.

I used Lavender Oil for the kiddos and grown ups too! My skin is so beautiful since I have been applying Lavender Oil the past year in my DIY lotions!

Facial Sun Lotion

I am using carrier oils in this recipe which are low in comedogenic ratings so as not to cause acne or clog the pores on the face. Coconut oil is not appropriate for the face, as it has a high comedogenic rating which is fine for the body skin which has sweat glands, but not for the facial skin which has oil glands.  I only recommend using it on the face as a make-up remover when it is wiped off instantly with a warm, wet washcloth.

1/2 Cup Sweet Almond or Jojoba Oil

1/4 Cup Unrefined Shea Butter or Mango Butter  (I used Mango Butter for the antioxidant properties)

1/4 Cup Beeswax

1/8 Cup Avocado Oil

3 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide Powder

15 Drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil

Optional Essential Oils:

10-20 total drops of Young Living Essential Oils (I only recommend Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, as I trust this company and their Seed to Seal  promise of oil purity and authenticity. I feel safe to use these oils alone on my family, my little tiny grandchildren and my clients in the hair salon.)
